Three Decades Of Implementing The Methodology That Defines Software Testing

SDT was founded in 1992 on a single premise — that software testing could be made systematic, teachable, and repeatable at enterprise scale. What followed was 30 years of implementing and refining the Keyword Test Automation methodology that now carries a U.S. patent and has been validated at some of the most demanding software organizations on the planet.

This is the story of that methodology. And the organization built to deliver it.

The Story of a Methodology

Most testing approaches are assembled from borrowed tools and convention. SDT’s was engineered from first principles — by people who had spent their careers at the sharpest edges of software quality before the field had a name for what they were doing.

1972 – 1992The Engineering Foundation
The intellectual roots of SDT’s methodology run through some of the most technically demanding environments in the history of software engineering. At AT&T Bell Labs in the late 1970s — where the UNIX operating system, the C programming language, and the foundational principles of software engineering were being defined — SDT’s founder was learning to think about software quality at the highest level the industry offered.

At Tandem Computers through the 1980s, that same expertise was applied to fault-tolerant systems serving ATM networks, stock exchanges, banks, and telephone switching centers — environments where zero data loss and maximum uptime were not goals, they were the product.

In 1991, that accumulated expertise contributed to something that would shape the entire software testing industry: participation on the small IEEE team that developed Standard 829-1983 — the IEEE Standard for Software Test Documentation. Standard 829 became and remains the dominant international standard for software testing. This is not a credential — it is authorship of the field’s foundational rules.
1992 – 1999Building the IP
SDT was founded in 1992 with a specific mission: distill decades of enterprise testing expertise into a structured, teachable, and repeatable system. The first output was a fundamentals of software testing course — developed with senior test expert Chris Larson to codify what decades of experience had produced.

From that course came Software Testing in the Real World: Improving the Process — published in 1996. Not a theoretical textbook. A practitioner’s toolkit addressing the most frequently asked questions about methodologies, tools, technology, and organizational issues that testing teams were wrestling with. The book became the foundation of the SDT training program (STRW) and the conceptual basis for everything the framework would become.

By 1999, the Keyword-driven testing methodology that would define SDT’s service delivery — and eventually its patent — was in active development.
2003 – 2006 Enterprise Validation at Scale
From 2003, the SDT methodology began its enterprise validation phase — deployed not in pilot programs but in live production environments at organizations where failure was measured in dollars, patient outcomes, or regulatory exposure.

WellPoint HealthCare Networks in 2003 adopted the SDT methodology as the enterprise-wide corporate testing standard. Southwest Airlines in 2003. PepsiCo in 2004, through a transformation engagement that validated the framework at Fortune 50/100 scale.
2007 – 2012 Continued Scale & Patent Development
The methodology continued to be tested and refined across new environments: JCPenney in 2007, Research in Motion in 2009, State Compensation Insurance Fund in 2009, and MGM Resorts in 2010 + many more. Each engagement across different industries, different technology stacks, and different organizational structures — all validating that the Keyword framework was not a solution built for one context but a general methodology that scaled.

In parallel, the SDT development team was completing the engineering work that would result in U.S. Patent No. 9,489,277 B2 — formally protecting the Keyword-driven test design and automation approach that had been refined over two decades of enterprise deployment.
2012 – 2020The Patented Framework
With the patent issued, the SDT Keyword Test Automation framework became the only formally protected methodology of its kind in software testing. The framework continues as SDT’s primary service delivery vehicle — now enhanced with AI-assisted test selection, cloud-native execution environments, and CI/CD integration that keeps pace with how modern software is actually built and shipped.

The same core methodology. The same fundamental insight — that test cases should be designed in business language by people who understand the business, not scripted in code by engineers who have to maintain it forever. Evolved for 30 years of changing technology. Unchanged in the principles that make it work.
2020 – 2022Testing at the Speed of Agile & Distributed Teams
As organizations rapidly adopted continuous delivery and remote engineering, SDT's Keyword-driven framework demonstrated a structural advantage: test cases designed in plain business language could be authored, reviewed, and maintained by distributed teams without requiring a central scripting expert. The roles-based separation of test design from automation engineering — core to the methodology since the 1990s — became a competitive differentiator when teams could no longer sit in the same room. During this period SDT delivered a multi-year engagement building a scalable Keyword automation framework for a machine learning–powered document intelligence platform — covering Desktop UI, Web UI, Mobile, and APIs — and integrated the full regression suite into the client's CI/CD pipeline. Automated regression showed potential for ~330% ROI across continuous releases.
2023 – PresentExpanding into AI, Cybersecurity & Advanced Monitoring
With AI and machine learning now embedded in production systems across every industry SDT serves, the firm extended its testing capabilities to meet the new frontier. SDT now provides QA coverage for AI architectures, machine learning model pipelines, and blockchain-based systems — domains where traditional test approaches break down because outputs are probabilistic rather than deterministic. Alongside testing, SDT launched advanced real-time monitoring solutions: continuous system health tracking, AI-driven anomaly detection that flags failures before they impact users, and infrastructure performance reporting covering server response times and database integrity. This positions SDT as a full-lifecycle quality partner — not just a pre-release gating function, but an ongoing reliability layer for enterprise software in production. The firm continues serving Fortune 500 clients across technology, aerospace, healthcare, finance, and government — the same methodology, now applied to a generation of software that didn't exist when the framework was first designed.

What SDT Has Built

SDT’s value is not carried by any one person or engagement. It is carried by three institutional assets that were built deliberately, over time, and are documented, protected, and validated at startup level to enterprise scale.

The Work In The Process

The Published Methodology

Software Testing in the Real World: Improving the Process (1996) is the foundational document of the SDT testing approach — an authoritative, practitioner-focused guide addressing the methodologies, tools, technology, and organizational issues that define sustainable software testing improvement.

The book is the basis for the SDT Software Testing in the Real World (STRW) training program, which has been delivered to enterprise clients across financial services, healthcare, aerospace, high‑tech, and retail.

This is the kind of IP foundation that acquirers look for: a published, citable methodology with a 30‑year validation record that is entirely independent of any individual’s continued presence.

Certifying our Discoveries

The Patented Framework

U.S. Patent No. 9,489,277 B2 — issued for the Keyword‑driven test design and automation methodology that SDT developed and refined over two decades of enterprise deployment. The only patent of its kind in software test automation.

The patent is clean: no litigation, no encumbrances, no co‑inventor disputes, no licensing conflicts. It protects the core mechanism that makes the framework different — the separation of test design from automation engineering through plain‑language Keywords.

You do not need to write code to design a test case. That is the patented insight. And it is what makes SDT’s regression libraries maintainable, scalable, and trustworthy.

Proof in the pudding

Three Decades of Validated Deployments

The framework has been deployed at Fortune 500 organizations across every major industry vertical — not in controlled pilot environments, but in live production regression programs where the cost of failure was real and visible.

Financial systems processing millions of daily transactions. Healthcare platforms serving hundreds of thousands of patients. Aerospace programs operating under government oversight. Retail platforms running through peak season.

This is not experience as a credential. It is evidence as a body of work

Why This Matters to Your Release Cycle

Refinement produces one practical outcome: software organizations release faster, with fewer defects escaping to production, and without scaling QA headcount every time release pressure increases.

Most testing failures are not talent problems. They are framework problems — teams scripting test cases in code that becomes impossible to maintain, automation coverage that erodes with every release, and QA that becomes a bottleneck instead of an accelerant. The SDT Keyword framework was built specifically to eliminate those failure modes.

What follows is what SDT has built to deliver that outcome — and what makes it durable.

A Focused Model. Built for the Long Term.

SDT is not a large generalist testing firm. It is a highly specialized testing services organization built around a single methodology, deployed by experts who have used it across hundreds of startup and enterprise environments.

Every SDT engagement is structured as a long‑term capability build — not a project with a defined end date and a handoff to whoever is available. The Keyword framework is designed to be maintained, extended, and owned by the client’s environment over time. SDT’s job is to build something that outlasts the engagement.
